Brayben is an acclaimed English performer and one of only six actresses to win that country's Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical twice. Her second win, in 2023, was for originating the title role in *Tammy Faye*'s 2022 world premiere in London.

Brayben also appeared on screen in an episode of *Doctor Who* and as Princess Diana in the TV movie *King Charles III*, both in 2017.

Christian Dominique Borle is a two-time Tony Award-winning actor and Broadway favorite, who was born on October 1, 1973 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended the city’s famed School of Drama at Carnegie Mellon University, graduated in 1995, and moved to New York City.

After appearing in a German production of The Who’s Tommy&nbsp;and a National Tour of West Side Story, Borle made his Broadway debut, appearing as Willard Hewitt in the 1998 Broadway adaptation of Footloose. He went on to join the ensembles of the 2000 revival of Jesus Christ Superstar&nbsp;and the short-lived 2002 musical Amour.&nbsp;His first starring role was as Jimmy Smith in the Broadway premiere of Thoroughly Modern Millie&nbsp;in 2003, succeeding original cast member Gavin Creel. Next, he played several roles in Monty Python’s Spamalot, starred as Emmett Forrest in Legally Blonde&nbsp;(earning his first Tony nomination in 2007), and took over as Bert in Mary Poppins&nbsp;in October 2009.

In 2010, he starred as Prior Walter in the off-Broadway revival of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes&nbsp;and then as Black Stache in the New York Theatre Workshop production of Peter and the Starcatcher&nbsp;in 2011. The latter transferred to Broadway and resulted in Borle’s first Tony Award win in 2012. He returned to Broadway to originate the role of William Shakespeare in the musical comedy <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/something-rotten">Something Rotten!</a>&nbsp;in 2015, winning his second Tony, and went on to star as Marvin in the 2016 revival of the musical <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/falsettos">Falsettos</a>. Although primarily considered a stage actor, he has also appeared in multiple onscreen projects, most famously starring as Tom Levitt in NBC’s Broadway-centric TV series Smash. In addition, he also starred in NBC’s popular live televised musicals, portraying Max Detweiler in “The Sound of Music Live!” in 2013 and Mr. Smee and George Darling in “Peter Pan Live!” in 2014.

**Lunt-Fontanne Theatre** is one of the most prestigious theatrical venues in New York. The plant at the centre of <a href="/show/little-shop-of-horrors">Little Shop of Horrors</a> that feeds on human blood may have had its sights on world domination, but the musical that was based on the low-budget 1960 comedy sci-fi film of the same name has actually long achieved it, so it ultimately got what it wanted. And now the show has come full circle, 37 years on from its Off-Off-Broadway beginnings at the WPA Theatre (now no more) in May 1982, before moving to the larger Orpheum Theater on Second Avenue in the East Village that summer, where it ran for five years and became the highest-grossing show in Off-Broadway history until then, to find a new home at another Off-Broadway house just off Eighth Avenue in midtown Manhattan.In the intervening years, it has been turned into a feature film and played in the West End and on Broadway (the latter in a new production in 2003 that ran for less than a year at the Virginia Theatre, now the August Wilson), but its true home is a more modestly scaled place like the 270-seater <a href="/theatres/westside-theatre">Westside Theatre</a>, a former Baptist church built in 1889 that has been used as a theatre space since the mid-1970s.But while it is naturally a special pleasure and privilege to see the show at close quarters again, everything about this new version screams Broadway, from its above-the-title casting of multiple Tony Award nominees Jonathan Groff, Tammy Blanchard and two-time Tony winner <a href="/actor-profile/christian-borle">Christian Borle</a>, to its creative staff, led by director Michael Mayer, Tony winner for his original production of Spring Awakening. In trying to mine new colours for Audrey, the abused floral shop assistant who falls for her work colleague Seymour as he nurtures a new exotic plant that he names Audrey II after her, Tammy Blanchard channels her into a sultry Rita Heyworth-inspired character, with her songs slowed down into torch songs of despair. 'Somewhere that's Green' sounds less aspirational of a better life than a dread doubt of ever achieving it.Jonathan Groff seems similarly depressed and downtrodden as Seymour, while Christian Borle plays the dentist Orin and a range of other characters purely as bright, eager caricature.There are some compensating pleasures from the trio of street urchins Ronnette (Ari Groover), Crystal (Salome Smith) and Chiffon (Joy Woods), who are a kind of Greek chorus observing and commenting on the action in Alan Menken's wonderful pastiche score. Some Like It Hot Broadway

“What are you thirsty for?” teases Sweet Sue, a brassy Prohibition-era bandleader, in the opening moment in [*Some Like It Hot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24262-some-like-it-hot-tickets). Well, since she asked, I’d like a new Broadway musical comedy that’s a bracing, fizzy cocktail garnished with a winning cast.

Happily, this lavish show based on the Oscar-winning 1959 Billy Wilder classic rom-com mostly delivers that. Screen-to-stage adaptations are always tricky endeavors, and this one scores points for not just tracing the source but turning up some fresh ideas of its own. 

If only director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw wasn’t so bent on selling nearly every song and tap dance number so relentlessly and formulaically hard. A mob hit sets the plot in motion, and the operative word in his staging is overkill. Some like it hot, sure, but not constantly. The production needs more room to breathe.

Despite that reservation, there’s still a lot to like. There’s a batch of buoyant songs by Marc Shaiman (music and lyrics) and Scott Wittman (lyrics), pros at matching showtunes to a particular period. In *Hairspray*, the team welcomed us to the ’60s. Their latest jazzy, horn-happy score whisks us back to 1933. Not every song leaves such a lasting impression as the juicy title number, but they all set the scene and flesh out characters.

Bookwriters Matthew Lopez (*The Inheritance*) and Amber Ruffin (*A Black Lady Sketch Show*) have packed the story with laughs as we follow saxophonist Joe ([Christian Borle](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/christian-borle)) and stand-up bassist Jerry (J. Harrison Ghee). The lifelong pals find themselves in mortal danger after witnessing a gangland execution in Chicago. 

The friends hatch a do-or-die plan to dress in drag and reinvent themselves — Joe becomes Josephine, Jerry morphs into Daphne. They hustle their way into a women’s touring band led by Sweet Sue (NaTasha Yvette Williams) that’s headed to the West Coast.

Once they get to San Diego, they’ll make a break for Mexico. But obstacles arise — namely Sugar (Adrianna Hicks), the band’s lead singer who catches Joe’s eye; Osgood (Kevin del Aguila), a soda pop titan crushing on Daphne; and Spats (Mark Lotito), the mob boss out to off the witnesses.

To his credit, Nicholaw sees to it that each scene is composed like a movie still, and the design team lends invaluable support. Scott Pask’s sets are picture-perfect, Gregg Barnes’ costumes reek period chic, and Natasha Katz’s shifting lighting sets the mood.

One gorgeous moment begins on a train and cleverly dissolves into a club in near-cinematic fashion, all while Sugar belts a torchy tune. A baggage car scene where Sugar reveals her big-screen dreams to Josephine becomes improbably beautiful.

Borle is a hoot in the role made famous onscreen by Tony Curtis. Bespectacled Josephine’s growing exasperation about repeatedly being told she’s no spring chicken is a joke that just doesn’t get old. Borle seems to be channeling Mira Sorvino’s speaking style from *Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion* — it’s an odd choice that works.

In the Jack Lemmon part, Ghee endears and delights. Jerry’s discovery and self-embrace of Daphne recalls Lopez’s play, *The Legend of Georgia McBride*. Like that work, this musical regards themes of identity and transformation with smarts and sensitivity.

Hicks brings the right notes of vulnerability and yearning to Sugar, played in the film by Marilyn Monroe. Kevin Del Aguila is a rubber-limbed riot as the over-the-top and open-minded Osgood. Angie Schworer pops up periodically with a running gag that never failed to produce chuckles.

Following a climactic dance production recalling a slapstick-y highlight of the musical *High Button Shoes*, everybody naturally gets what – and who – they want in *Some Like It Hot*. No one leaves thirsty.

The Palace Theatre was designed by Kirchoff and Rose, and funded by vaudeville entrepreneur Martin Beck. The Palace Theatre officially opened on March 24, 1913 and became a prime destination for vaudeville acts.

During the Great Depression, the venue became the RKO Palace and primarily hosted radio recordings and functioned as a cinema.

In 1965, the Nederlander Organization purchased the property from RKO and restored its use as a traditional theatre, reopening the venue on January 29, 1966 with the premiere of the musical *Sweet Charity*.

Since 2018, the Palace Theatre has been shut down; the building was lifted 30 feet off the ground to make way for new developments below. The renovation is scheduled for completion in 2023.
